The O’Hara – Bagshaw Family Tree

( Our ancestors did What  ?!? )

Meet the Allsops

Another dynasty deeply rooted in the heart of the Peak District, the Allsops were based in and around Hognaston, some 13 miles north west of Derby and bordering on Carsington Water. In 1675, John Ogilby compiled the first proper road map of England – previous ones had been of little practical use. He called himself ‘Cosmographer to the King, Charles II’. On his map, the only road in Derbyshire is shown going through Hognaston, when it would have been little more than a cart track. Ogilby measured the distance not only in miles but furlongs as well, all this with nothing more to help than a wheel geared to a counting device.

Hognaston

Robert Allsop was born some 37 years after Ogilby’s map was produced.

Situated on the London – Manchester road, Hognaston would have been a busy coaching stage but we do not know if Robert had any connections to that trade. There was a thriving haulage industry around the town where packhorse trains were a regular sight and it would seem that these were the main sources of income in the late 1600s and early 1700s.

Brassington

From the late 1700s the Allsops were to be found in Brassington, some 3 miles from Hognaston. To say that they were contented with their lot seems to be an understatement. We have located little information other than dates for most of our Allsops and no information on employment. Still an area that needs much work.

Families in More Detail

To take a look at some of our individual families in more detail just click on the photos below and we will take you to a more detailed story of that family as we know it including the locations associated with the family.

Meet the Heads of the Family

The O'Haras

From Ballina, County Sligo (Mayo) as far as Pennsylvania in the USA and south across the Sottish border to South Yorkshire.

The Rynns

Originally from Ireland, Richard Rinn had emigrated to Scotland after 1828. The spelling of their name mutated in their new land.

The Pridmores

With a large concentration in Bourne in Lincolnshire, their saddlery skills were easily transferred to Sheffield in the mid-19th century

The Temprells

The Temprells were a Nottinghamshire family that settled onthe South Yorkshire border. A mining family.

The Bagshaws

Strething back many generations to the Derbyshire / Nottinghamshire border, the Bagshaws appear to have had little wanderlust.

The Parrys

Inhabiting Denbighshire and the North Welsh coast, they spread their wings into Merseyside but not too much further.

The Hopkinsons

Our Hopkinsons show a presence in Derbyshire going back to the mid-18th century with continuity there for at least 3 centuries.

The Allsops

Another family with a Derbyshire pedigree back to the early 1700's. Ashbourne, Hognaston and Brassington being favoured.
