The USA Census
It's not the size of the family but it's head
The U.S. Census Bureau reports that American homes are 650 square feet larger today than they were in 1980. Unfortunately, so are most Americans.
(Conan O’Brien)
The first Federal Population Census in the United States was conducted in 1790, under the authority of the Secretary of State. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson expressed skepticism over the final count, expecting a higher population than the 3.9 million inhabitants recorded. The 1790 census was conducted by U.S. marshals, who were responsible for counting the population in each judicial district.
Evolution and Expansion
Throughout the 19th century, the census underwent significant changes. From 1850 to 1920, the census enumerated “mulattos” as a separate racial category. In 1870, the census began to be conducted by specially trained enumerators, rather than U.S. marshals. The 1910 census introduced the current system of grouping states into regions.
