Wills and Probates

It's official, he left you 20 pence.

The official legal approval of wills written in the UK comes in the form of the government issuing a person's probate. It is the process of proving that the will is valid.

Nearly all of these images have been collected from records held by Ancestry. They are just one further piece of evidence in the lives of the many peoplein our families who left a will in order that their property and possessions could be distributed as they wished.

The first known probate dates back to the 11th century but there are few still in existance prior to the 1400s. They were dealt with by ecclesiastical courts until 1858 when the Principal Probate Registry was formed to take on the task. (a network of civil courts)
