Bagshaw Birth Records

Birth records for the Bagshaw group

These records are made up of three sections. Firstly Birth Registers, secondly Birth Certificates and lastly Baptism Registers.

In 1538, the Church of England required each parish priest to keep a handwritten register of baptisms, banns, marriages, and burials.

In 1837, civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths began in England and Wales. This was done in response to Parliament’s recognition of the need for accurate records for voting, planning, taxation, and defense.

Registration of birth records wasn’t compulsory until 1875.
